Rep. Paul Sawyer Applauds $19.25 Million Federal BUILD Grant for Siegen Lane Improvements

BATON ROUGE, La. — State Representative Paul Sawyer praised the U.S. Department of Transportation’s award of approximately $19.25 million through the highly competitive Better Utilizing Investments to Leverage Development (BUILD) grant program for improvements to Siegen Lane in House District 69.

Sawyer specifically commended St. George Mayor Dustin Yates and his team for advancing a project that successfully competed for one of the nation’s most sought-after federal transportation grants.

“Mayor Yates and his team deserve tremendous credit for securing this award,” Sawyer said. “BUILD grants attract applications from communities across America, and only the strongest, best-prepared projects are selected. This is an outstanding accomplishment for St. George and for the entire Capital Region.”

The project will improve approximately 1.35 miles of Siegen Lane between Interstate 10 and U.S. Highway 61 by constructing landscaped raised medians, upgrading traffic signals, enhancing pedestrian crossings and sidewalks, improving transit stops, and adding lighting and other complete streets features.

Sawyer noted that the investment addresses one of the region’s most pressing transportation challenges.

“Baton Rouge consistently ranks among the most congested metropolitan areas in the United States, and Siegen Lane is one of the busiest and most heavily traveled corridors in our region,” Sawyer said. “This project will improve traffic flow, reduce delays, enhance safety for motorists and pedestrians, and strengthen one of the Capital Region’s most important commercial corridors.”

“This investment will deliver benefits for decades to come,” Sawyer said. “I’m excited to keep doing my part to make sure the state stays engaged and keeps this project moving forward. Congratulations to Mayor Yates, his staff, and all of the local, state, and federal partners who helped make this remarkable achievement possible. I look forward to seeing construction begin and the lasting improvements this project will bring to District 69 and the Capital Region.”
